Rachel Johnson

Rachel Johnson is a Kansas native, growing up in the country just outside of Lindsborg. A nature enthusiast at heart, she spent her days in the creeks with her two siblings, climbing trees, building makeshift treehouses, and playing with any animal she could catch. Her parents supported her creative and adventurous spirit, signing her up for art classes when she was only four years old with local artist Lee Becker. Here Rachel’s imagination flourished. She was introduced to ceramic art, drawing from observation, plein air painting and much more. It’s no doubt, Lee Becker left a lasting impression on the course of Rachel’s future. 

As long as she can remember, Rachel has been making art. A true passion is creating for others - whether it’s an intricate pop-up card, a personalized painting, carved print, woodburning or even handmade earrings. She has a wide interest in all media and is always up for learning a new artform, with an “I can make that” mentality. This passion for creating led Rachel to the University of Kansas, where she received a BFA in Visual Art Education with a Minor in Painting. 

Since 2013, Rachel has been teaching Visual Arts in the Lawrence community. She has taught K-5 Art at Woodlawn and Pinckney Elementary, and spent time as a Studio Instructor both at Muddy Waters and the Lawrence Arts Center, teaching youth through adults. There’s nothing better than sharing an enthusiasm for art with curious minds - whether they are four or eighty-four years old. It is her belief that art is crucial to life and learning! 

It appears Rachel’s education has come full circle, as she is currently teaching and mentoring Visual Art Education (VAE) students in the exact school she received her own degree and licensure. Attending the University of Kansas was an impactful experience for Rachel. She fell in love with not only the campus, but the charm of the town itself, and she now calls Lawrence home. She is grateful to be back at KU, this time as an educator. Rachel is committed to continuing the positive impact of art-based inquiry for future generations of students, artists, and educators.
