Alicia Kelly, BFA: Printmaking | Minor: Art History, '10
Q: When did you graduate from KU, and what was your Major/Minor?
A: "I graduated in 2010, with a major in Fine Arts-printmaking and a Minor in Art History."
Q: What have you been up to post-graduation?
A: "After graduation, I traveled as cheaply and as often as possible. I worked a few service industry jobs and molded out a few days of my week for studio time. Lived in a couple different cities and found myself drawn back to the Midwest. Over time, my studio time took the place of my day jobs. Focusing mainly on grant writing, residencies and group exhibitions, my studio practice slowly developed into a full-time career. I fell into teaching processes I love, such as screenprinting and papercutting / paper engineering, at two arts nonprofits in Lawrence, KS and volunteer my time for the City of Lawrence as a Cultural Arts Commissioner."
Q: What would you like to share with current and future Visual Art students?
A: "Get excited about what you create. Studio time is a pleasure, enjoy those moments getting to know yourself and do it often. Don't save your good ideas for later, do them now. Travel if you can and learn as many new skills as possible. Find your communities and show up. It's hard to live straight off selling your work (if that's your goal), develop multiple revenue streams (gigs, commissions, grants, teaching etc.), no matter how small the income- if one revenue stream disappears you are still standing."
