Portfolio and Essay Requirements
In addition to applying to The University of Kansas, The Department of Visual Art requires a 10-20 image portfolio, a printed Color Inventory Sheet, and responses to 3 essay questions.
Your digital portfolio should consist of 10 - 20 images, saved as JPEG or TIF format on disc or flash drive, clearly labeled with your name. The images should be no more than 600 by 900 pixels (landscape or portrait), or 6 by 9 inches in size at 100 ppi (pixels per inch, landscape or portrait orientation).
RECOMMENDED FOR A STRONG PORTFOLIO
Include work in a variety of mediums such as drawings, paintings, sketches, ceramics, jewelry/metalsmithing, digital photography, video art, printmaking, sculpture, or textile design. Images of 3D artwork (such as sculpture, jewelry, and ceramics) may be shown with two or three different views. Choose your strongest pieces. ( PLEASE NOTE: The department strongly encourages all artists to develop a habit of drawing from life (i.e. figure drawing, gesture drawing, portraiture, landscape drawing, still-life) and prefer to see some life drawing represented in your portfolio, regardless of the area(s) you are most interested in studying.
COLOR INVENTORY SHEET
A Color Inventory Sheet with images must be printed out and included with the portfolio. Please indicate: your name, phone number, e-mail and intended major. Each inventory image should be at least 2 by 3 inches.
Below or to the side of each image, list:
- title of the piece
- date of completion
- brief description
- In the case of group projects, indicate your personal responsibilities
Each question is to be answered in approximately 250 words. This portion is to be turned in with your digital portfolio.
