Visual Art

Visual ArtUniversity of Kansas is fast becoming the school of choice for ambitious art students throughout the region. The Department of Visual Art provides students with the technical skill and cultural awareness essential to the careers of professional artists, scholars, teachers or administrators.

Kansas Visual Art students have access to excellent facilities and close mentoring from the Visual Art faculty, a diverse group of award winning artists. Coursework includes practice, discussion and critiques with faculty, advisors, and visiting artists. Cross discipline investigations are strongly encouraged and many courses are team-taught. Exhibition and installation spaces are readily available throughout the beautiful community of Lawrence. Kansas City with its rich history in the visual arts is just a short drive away.

Our printmaking facility includes intaglio, stone litho, relief and screen processes. Our new presses allow large format print production. There is also equipment for papermaking and a separate book arts shop. Our new media area dovetails with Design's photo media program and includes digital imaging facilities as well as sound and projection equipment, upgraded annually as those technologies evolve. The painting area includes three enormous group studios as well as smaller individual studios for upper level majors. The Department of Visual Art places great emphasis on drawing and maintains four large well equipped drawing studios. The Art and Design Gallery-- a teaching space available for student presentations, visiting artist exhibitions, and local shows—has been recently refurbished. Seminars on specialized topics, a strong visiting artist schedule, a rotating faculty of artists, Second Life virtual classroom and exhibition space, critics and scholars from across the country, visiting lecturers, trips to major cities and study abroad possibilities-- all enrich students studying Visual Art at the University of Kansas.

There has never been a more exciting time to be an artist. Come to the University of Kansas and discover why.
